Northern Virginia is home to a some of the Mid-Atlantic region’s most upscale suburbs. Within easy commuting distance of Washington D.C. and Baltimore, much of the area is linked by public transportation including the Washington Metro system and the Virginia Railway Express. Some of Northern Virginia’s districts include Arlington and Fairfax Counties.
Arlington is home to neighborhoods including Ballston, Pentagon City, and Virginia Square. It’s a place that is intimately tied to the federal agencies of the United States, many of which make Arlington their headquarters, including the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and the Drug Enforcement Agency. The Arlington National Cemetery is a military cemetery that is home to memorials including the John F. Kennedy Enteral Flame, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Pentagon is also in Arlington.
In Fairfax County, Alexandria’s historic district puts most others in the United States to shame, as it dates back to 1749. Known as Old Town, it is the home of many boutique shops and restaurants. Rosemont, The Berg, and Del Rey are all historic residential neighborhoods in Arlington. Del Rey’s annual Art on the Avenue event is a popular regional festival. Some of Fairfax County’s other annual events include the Tinner Hill Blues Festival in Fall Church, and the Fall Festival in downtown Fairfax.
