As the capital of the United States, Washington D.C. is at the center of global politics, and yet it remains in its own unique cultural bubble. D.C. is a place with its own funk music sub-genre (go-go), 800 acres of outdoor space along the Potomac River (Great Falls Park), and neighborhood enclaves ranging from Shaw’s Little Ethiopia to Georgetown’s preppy stomping grounds.

D.C. is known for many iconic monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, and the Washington Monument. These are all concentrated in the National Mall. This magnificent park is a testament to America’s past. It is where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his most famous speech, and where many of the nation’s most important civic ceremonies and protests have taken place. As the home of the White House and the 19 museums that make up the Smithsonian, the National Mall deserves its status as one of the country’s top tourist destinations. But D.C. is more than this tiny sliver of the big city.

Dupont Circle is where you’ll find most of D.C.‘s young, artsy crowd on the first Friday of every month, when local galleries open their doors for a neighborhood-wide party. It’s a great place to go out on the town the rest of the month as well, with bars and clubs like the safari-themed Big Hunt and the Eighteenth Street Lounge.

Georgetown is a hilly residential town whose postcard perfect streets are a dream for residents, and reason enough for tourists to visit. Naturally, Georgetown University dominates the neighborhood, but attractions for the post-graduate set include the Dumbarton Concerts, Blues Alley, and fine dining institutions like 1789.

Other great D.C. neighborhoods include Shaw, Capitol Hill, and Adams Morgan.
