Towson is a suburb of Baltimore that was once a rural community, but is now a modern shopping capital. It is home to the epic Towson Town Center, the Towson Commons, the Shops at Kenliworth, and the Towson Marketplace. But despite the deluge of commerce, Towson retains plenty of charm. Perhaps the city is best known for Goucher College, a top-ranked liberal arts school, and the nearby Towson University. These schools infuses Towson with arts, culture, and energy.
Towson’s diverse dining scene includes great Vietnamese, Japanese, and Indian food. Towson Hot Bagels is surprisingly good, and S&J Crab Ranch is the perfect place to gorge on the local hardshell delicacy. Local entertainment includes live music and comedy at the Recher Theater, but if you’re looking for more excitement, Towson is an easy 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore.
Catonsville is another of Baltimore’s Northern Suburbs, notable for its splendid Victorian and Colonial architecture, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Lutherville is known for its excellent schools, and nearby Timonium hosts the annual Maryland State Fair. Guilford is an upscale residential community that is a National Register Historic District, and is home to the Sherwood Gardens. Ruxton’s L’Hirondelle Club is one of the oldest private social clubs in the country, and gives you a feel for the area’s pedigree, though a certain snobbiness is balanced out by down-to-earth spots like the Corner Stable rib joint in Cockeysville.
